Jahmil French, star of 'Degrassi: The Next Generation,' dead at 29; co-stars mourn

Jahmil French, an actor who appeared in "Degrassi: The Next Generation" from 2009 to 2013, has died. He was 29.

On Tuesday, the actor's agent Gabrielle Kachman confirmed his death in a statement to USA TODAY.

"It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of a dear friend and client Jahmil French," she said. "He will be remembered by many for his passion for the arts, his commitment to his craft, and his vibrant personality. I ask that you keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."

Kachman did not provide French's cause of death.

French's "Degrassi" co-stars took to Twitter to mourn his death following the news.

"Heartbroken over the loss of our friend Jahmil French," Annie Clark, who played Fiona Coyne on the show, wrote, also posting a clip of French dancing. "This video is how I’ll always think of him. So full of energy and fun. He was always dancing. A true talent and a great friend. We will all miss you so much Jahmil."

Dylan Everett, who played Campbell Saunders, recalled that French was one of the first people he met while working on the show, and that the actor "immediately made me feel welcome."

"Wanted to pay my respects to an incredibly kind, funny, and talented individual; Jahmil French," Everett wrote. "He disarmed you with a smile and his confidence and energy was infectious. You’ll be missed, brother."

Chloe Rose, who played Katie Matlin, tweeted that she was "still in shock."

"Jahmil will be missed," she added. "He was an integral part of the Degrassi family and certainly a huge part of my degrassi days. He always wanted to make people laugh and smile, a true joy to be around. Rest in Peace"

Stefan Brogren, who played Archie "Snake" Simpson, shared that he was "sick with the news of Jahmil’s passing."

"He performed Dave with such sensitivity and thoughtfulness and could make me laugh so easily," Brogren continued. "It was a pleasure to work with him and he will be missed. This is a real loss. Rest In Peace."

Producer Joshua Safran wrote that he will have more to say about French later but is still "processing this devastating news" about his friend.

According to IMDB, French played Dave Turner on "Degrassi: Minis" from 2009 to 2010 in addition to playing the role on "The Next Generation." He went on to act in the shows "The Divide," "Remedy," "Let's Get Physical" and "Soundtrack."
