Calusa Garden Club presents ‘Art in Bloom’

Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island held its flower show “Art in Bloom” on April 19. The event, chaired by Calusa Garden Club President Kimberly Korb Porter, featured over 20 floral designs the club members prepared to interpret pieces of art on display.

The exhibit that the club members interpreted included both the Marco Island Center for the Arts Adult Student Show and the Marco Island Academy student show, and the media included sculpture, painting, photographs and weaving.

The goal of the floral designers was to interpret their chosen piece of art, not to duplicate it. There were beautiful interpretations of paintings, photographs and sculpture as well as of a textile woven shawl produced by garden club member Nanette Baumgardner.

Exhibit attendees voted for their favorite designs, with Bonnie Colman winning first place in The People’s Choice awards for her floral design interpreting a landscape of yellows and purples.

Linda Spell won second place in The People’s Choice awards for her miniature design of lavender and purple reflecting the colors of Nanette Baumgardner’s woven shawl.

Runners-up for the People’s Choice awards were Elizabeth Haines Papagiannis for her green and white design suggesting reflected trees; Lindy Kowalczyk for her creative design with colors and shapes looking like a watermelon painting; Audrina Flowers for her underwater design reflecting a painting of colorful fish and Diane Chestnut for her design that interpreted a painting of blueberries.

In addition, Flower Show Judge Connie Lowery awarded design awards to Linda Spell in the miniature design category, Bonnie Colman in the traditional design category, and Sara Wolf in the creative design category.
