Mario Van Peebles’ latest action film has it all: guns aplenty, anti-government crazies and a touch of madness.

Mario Van Peebles directs and stars in the action thriller "Armed."

USA TODAY has the exclusive premiere of the new trailer for “Armed,” the first film Van Peebles has directed, written, produced and starred in since 2003’s “Baadasssss!”

The upcoming thriller and cautionary tale (in theaters and available digitally and on-demand Sept. 14) tackles the Second Amendment and mental illness with the story of a former U.S. marshal named Chief (Van Peebles), who has had a rough go of it since a raid with his group of undercover agents went sideways. When Chief learns from a former colleague (Ryan Guzman) that everybody involved in the incident is having the same psychological issues, he starts to wonder if a grander conspiracy is at play.

The cast also includes Columbus Short, Jemma Dallender, Laz Alonso and William Fichtner, plus appearances by singer Dionne Warwick and CNN host/political commentator Van Jones.
